Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a league source, reports that 49ers G Alex Boone offered to play out the 2014 season for just $1, if he could become a free agent next year.
- Florio adds that the CBA would require the 49ers to pay Boone a minimum salary, but he was reportedly willing to donate everything except $1 to charity.
Boone spent a large portion of the summer holding out for a new contract, which he eventually received from San Francisco.
His new contract is worth $6 million over two years and includes another $2 million available in incentives.
Had Boone reached free agency next year, he would have done pretty well on the open market given his age and the number of teams that could use offensive line help.
Boone, 27, moved from tackle to guard two seasons ago and it paid off in a big way for the 49ers, as he graded out as the No. 3 guard in the 2012 season according to Pro Football Focus. However, he regressed some last year when he was rated as the No. 40 guard out of 81 qualifying players.
