Report: 49ers Have No Intention Of Releasing OLB Aldon Smith

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the 49ers have no intention of releasing OLB Aldon Smith following his recent incident that led to his recent arrest.

Rapoport mentions that a suspension for Smith is likely, but he didn’t offer any idea of how many games Smith could miss this year.

“It is possible Aldon Smith isn’t on the field because he may be in jail,” Rapoport said.

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News recently mentioned that Smith “probably won’t play for the 49ers in 2014,” but it appears as though they are prepared to give him another shot.

It would make sense for San Francisco to allow the legal process to play out and see what the league elects to do.

Smith, 24, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and the 49ers will still have to address the contracts of QB Colin Kaepernick and WR Michael Crabtree at some point. They can pick up Smith’s fifth-year option and buy them some time to see how the 2014 season plans considering that fifth-year options are guaranteed.

I’m sure we’ll be hearing more regarding Smith in the coming months.
