Report: 49ers “Highly Unlikely” To Release QB Alex Smith

According ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the 49ers are “highly, highly, highly unlikely” to release QB Alex Smith, via Rotoworld.

San Francisco previously mentioned that they would do what’s in the best interest of Alex Smith, but this is just another indication that they intend to recoup some value for him during the offseason.

Clearly, Smith would prefer to be cut loose, as he would then be able to sign with a team of his choosing. There’s still a chance that the 49ers could elect to keep Smith as their backup next season, despite his $7.5 million base salary and $1 million roster bonus.

Given that Smith is one of the best available quarterbacks, there stands a decent chance that the 49ers will be able to find a trade partner at some point in the next few months.
