Report: 49ers Leaning Towards Not Franchising S Dashon Goldson

CSN Bay Area reports that various league sources have informed them that the 49ers are leaning toward not using their franchise tag on S Dashon Goldson for the second consecutive season.

When asked about the team’s plan to use the franchise tag, GM Trent Baalke had this to say:

“(I) don’t have an answer for that. Whether we use the tag or not, I really don’t know at this point. I think I do know, but I’m not willing to share it at this time.”

Goldson, a two time Pro-Bowler, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent for the third-straight offseason and is obviously looking to secure a long-term deal. Franchising Goldson would run them $7.45 million, which includes a 20 percent increase.

The team has eight days left to think about applying the franchise tag on Goldson before the March 4 deadline, although it appears that the team will not rely on it.

We have Goldson listed as the No. 9 best available player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
