Report: 49ers & Texans Both Put QB Jimmy Garoppolo Through Private Workouts

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports that the San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans both putĀ Eastern Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo through private workouts during Tuesday’s pro day.

Garoppolo is projected to be a second-round pick after having a largely successful career at the Division-2 level.Ā Garappolo boosted his stock after performing well during his East-West Shrine Game and later received an invite to the Senior Bowl after Alabama QB A.J. McCarron elected not to participate in the event.

In 2013, GaroppoloĀ threw for 5,050 yards to go along with 53 touchdowns.Ā

It’s hard to put a lot of stock in teams working out a quarterback prospect, but it always interesting to see which teams are working with draft prospects. The 49ers are working towards a contract extension forĀ QBĀ Colin Kaepernick, but they could target another developmental prospect in the middle rounds of this year’s draft.

San Francisco has an additional second-round pick to work this year from the Alex Smith-trade with Kansas City, so it seems reasonable to think they would keep all of their options open at that point in the draft.

As for the Texans, they are widely expected to draft a quarterback at No. 1 overall, so they could be doing their due diligence on contingency options in case they elect to go with someone like DE Jadeveon Clowney in round one.

We haveĀ Garoppolo going to the Bengals in the second-round of our most recent 2014 NFL Mock Draft.
