Report: 49ers Table Contract Talks With QB Colin Kaepernick

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the 49ers have tabled contract talks with QB and Colin Kaepernick while police investigate the “suspicious incident” that occurred in Miami.

49ers WR Quinton Patton and Seahawks WR Ricardo Lockette were also involved in the incident, but all three players are not expected to be charged.

  • According to Rapoport, the two sides are still hoping to have a new contract in place before the start of the 2014 season.
  • Rapoport adds that talks between the two parties were not going all that well and Kaepernick could end up signing a deal that would pay him in excess of $18 million per year.

Kaepernick, 26, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and will make just $973,766 for the 2014 season. Given how successful he’s been since taking over for Alex Smith during the 2012 season, and the fact that he’s just entering the prime of his career, it really wouldn’t be surprising to see him come close to Joe Flacco‘s contract, even if he ultimately falls a bit short.

Flacco signed a six-year contract worth $120.6 million that included a $29 million signing bonus and $51 million guaranteed.
