Report: 49ers Told Frank Gore He Had To Earn His Roster Spot In The Offseason

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network (per Chris Wesseling) reports that the 49ers front office approached veteran RB Frank Gore during the offseason and told him that he had to earn his roster spot this year.

  • Rapoport adds that this came after the team drafted Carlos Hyde in the second round.

There was talk during the offseason that Gore may have to accept a pay cut to be back with the 49ers, so this news doesn’t come as a huge surprise.

Joel Corry of CBS points out that Gore’s 2014 salary of $6.45M is actually pretty high for a running back over 30 years old.

Gore, 31, is in the final year of his four-year, $25.9 million contract, so there is a chance that San Francisco could elect to move on without the leading rusher in team history.

Over the course of five games this season, Gore has ran for 365 yards on 77 carries (4.7 YPC) and scored two total touchdowns. He has also contributed four receptions for 68 yards receiving.
