49ers, Jets, Texans, & Vikings Interested In Brian Hoyer

Update:

Manish Mehta reports that the Jets have inquired about free agent QB Brian Hoyer.

Josina Anderson of ESPN reports that the 49ers and Vikings are among the teams that have called to express interest in free agent QB Brian Hoyer.

According to Anderson, the Jets and Texans are “at the forefront” in regards to Hoyer, as they give him the best opportunity to start next year.

A source tells Anderson that “it’s still early in the process” and they’re expected to discuss the status of free agent talks later today.

  • Jeff Darlington of NFL Media mentioned that the Texans are a team to watch for Hoyer.
  • According to Darlington, the Texans like both Hoyer and Ryan Mallett, but his “sense” is that Hoyer is their target.
  • Caplan reported that there are five-six teams expected to have interest in Hoyer.

Hoyer is really one of the more intriguing free agents based on how limited the market is for quarterbacks this year.

Yesterday, a report said that Minnesota had contacted in free agent QB Shaun Hill, so it appears though they are serious about finding a backup to Teddy Bridgewater next season.

The problem with the 49ers and Vikings is that they could only offer him the ability to be a backup next year while other teams could at least given him the opportunity to compete for the starting job in training camp and the preseason.

Hoyer, 29, played out his two-year, $1.965 million contract that includes $250,000 guaranteed and is one of the better available players in a limited free agent class of quarterbacks.

Over the course of 14 games, Hoyer has thrown for 3,334 yards while completing 55.4 percent of his passes to go along with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 35 quarterback out of 39 players.
