49ers Are Unlikely To Be An Option For Ed Reed

Update:

Pro Football Talk reports that sources have informed them that the idea of the 49ers signing free agent FS Ed Reed is “likely not happening.”

PFT addsd that “it’s a smokescreen aimed at creating interest in Reed.

The Colts and Patriots have been tossed out as other speculative landing spots for Reed, so I guess we’ll see what happens.

We have him listed as the No. 36 best available player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that “some around the league” expect the 49ers to make a push to sign free agent FS Ed Reed if they’re unable to re-sign Dashon Goldson.

This coincides with a report from Pro Football Talk last night that Reed is at least an option for the 49ers.

It’s hard to imagine San Francisco competing for Goldson given their cap situation and the fact that they just took on another $6 million after trading for WR Anquan Boldin.

Jason La Canfora reports that free agent FS Ed Reed met with the Ravens recently and there’s “a good chance he moves on.”

La Canfora adds that Reid hired David Dunn as his agent, so he can begin meeting with teams in the coming days.

Pro Football Talk confirms that Reed has hired an agent and adds that their source mentioned that the 49ers could be a potential landing spot.

Reed, 34, could still return to Baltimore, but that will be probably be decided by the level of interest in him on the open market. Baltimore was forced to trade WR Anquan Boldin earlier in the day, so that they can try to retain ILB Dannell Ellerbe.
