Report: Adrian Peterson Wants To Play For Cowboys, Vikings Aren’t Interested In Trading Him

A source tells Josina Anderson of ESPN that “Adrian Peterson has not asked for a trade to the Cowboys and has not had any conversations with (Vikings GM) Rick Spielman.”

According to Jason Cole of the Bleacher Report, Adrian Peterson wants to play for the Cowboys and the Vikings are aware of this.

A high level executive tells Cole that even though both sides are aware of the situation, the Vikings “will not, do not want to trade him.”

Cole mentions that the Vikings especially do not want to trade him to the Cowboys.

However, Peterson could create a “stare down” with the Vikings if he’s adamant about not returning to Minnesota.

Ian Rapoport reported a few days ago that that even though Vikings GM Rick Spielman and HC Mike Zimmer have reached out to RB Adrian Peterson in recent weeks, he wants a “fresh start.”
According to Rapoport, the Vikings have no intention of releasing Peterson as this point in time, but he believes a trade could still be an option.
Peterson told Ben Goessling of ESPN.com that he’s “still uneasy” about the idea of playing the Vikings after they worked with the NFL get him placed on the commissioner’s exempt list.

For what it’s worth, Cole still thinks he’s more likely to playing for the Vikings in 2015.

The Cowboys could be in the market for a running back, depending on what transpires with free agent RB DeMarco Murray in the coming weeks.

The idea of Peterson possibly joining the Cowboys is nothing new, as reports had mentioned as much several months ago. Plus, Peterson is from Texas.

Peterson, 29, still has another three years remaining on his seven-year, $96 million contract that included $36 million guaranteed. Over the next three years, Peterson stands to make base salaries of $12.75 million (2015), $14.75 million (2016), and $16.75 million (2017).

As for his cap figures, the Vikings are looking at $15.4 million (2015), $15 million (2016), and $17 million (2017).

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Peterson outright would free up $13 million in available cap space and create $2.4 million dead money.

Peterson appeared in just one game for the Vikings and ran for 75 yards on 21 carries (3.6 YPC) while adding two receptions for 18 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
