Chiefs & Cardinals Believed To Have Interest In Alex Smith

Update:

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the 49ers “believe” they will be able to trade QB Alex Smith after being involved in trade talks at the NFL Combine.

Schefter mentions that the Chiefs and the Cardinals are believed to have interest in Smith.

A deal cannot be completed until March 12, so there figures to be plenty of speculation in the coming days.

Update:

Matt Barrows reports that he’s been informed that the 49ers do not have a trade in place for QB Alex Smith, despite numerous reports that have suggested as much.

Sacramento Bee reports that league sources have informed them that the 49ers are still shopping Smith.

The Chiefs are believed to be the team with the most interest.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the San Francisco 49ers have “expressed” to other NFL teams that a trade for QB Alex Smith is “effectively complete.

La Canfora mentions that a deal cannot be finalized until the new league, which starts on March 12. La Canfora adds that nothing’s official as of now, but other NFL teams believe it’s “effectively done.

La Canfora lists the Chiefs and Jaguars as the two teams that make the most sense, but admits that this is speculation on his part.

Ryan O’Halloran reports that Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell texted him “not us” in regards to Jacksonville possibly being an option for Smith.

Earlier reports indicated that the Chiefs were the most interested team in a possible deal for Smith, so it would make sense that they would be the favorites at this point. It’s hard to say whether or not this is an attempt to increase interest in a trade for Smith or if the 49ers really do have something in place and are being held up due to a formality.

It will be interesting to see what kind of compensation San Francisco receives for Smith, as recent reports suggest that they may have to accept a mid-round pick in return for him.

I’m sure we’ll hear more in the coming days.
