Report: Bears Worked Out RBs Javon Ringer & Phillip Tanner

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Bears also worked out free agent RBs Javon Ringer and Phillip Tanner on Monday.

The fact that the Bears have shown some recent interest in running backs really isn’t all that surprising given their last of depth behind Matt Forte

Chicago parted ways with Michael Bush and as things stand right now, Michael Ford is their No. 2 running back, so it would make plenty of sense for them to either draft someone in the middle rounds or bring in a veteran who can hopefully take some of the load off of Forte next season.

Ringer, 27, spent the past four years with the Titans before taking the 2013 season off. He recently worked out at Michigan State’s Pro Day and is looking to return to the NFL. His best season came in 2010 when he ran for 239 yards on 51 carries (4.7 YPC) and two touchdowns.

Tanner, 25, was a restricted free agent, but the Cowboys elected to not tender him an offer. Last year, he all 16 games but only managed to total 12 rushing yards and 33 receiving yards for Dallas while contributing a single touchdown. Tanner was able to help out on special teams.

All things considered, the Bears would probably be better off looking to the draft for a running back given the lack of quality options in the free agent market.
