Update: Free Agent TE Charles Clay To Meet With Bills, Likely To Sign Offer Sheet

Update:

According to Adam Schefter, TE Charles Clay is on his way to Buffalo to meet with the Bills, via Andrew Abramson.

  • Miami will have seven days to match an offer sheet.

With Clay going to Buffalo, it seems likely that he will in fact sign an offer sheet with the Bills.

Typically, the transition tag designation hurts a player’s standing on the free agent market, but Buffalo seems intent on acquiring Clay.  As previously reported, the Bills can structure the offer sheet in a way that would make matching it a difficult endeavor.

Clay, 25, caught 58 passes for 605 yards receiving and three touchdowns over the course of 14 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 14 tight end out of 67 qualifying players.

Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News reports the Bills will try to “structure the strongest possible offer sheet” for Dolphins TE Charles Clay, who was given the transition tag last week.

  • According Carucci, the Browns are also interested in Clay as well.

With the Dolphins handing out a record contract to DT Ndamukong Suh and the fact that they have limited cap space to work with beyond that, the Bills and Browns could actually make it very difficult on Miami, depending on the structure of the agreement.

This is definitely an interesting situation to watch in the coming weeks.

Mike Garafolo doesn’t see the transition tag scaring away prospect teams like the Bills in their pursuit of Dolphins TE Charles Clay.

  • Garafolo could see Clay making a visit to Buffalo at some point, but he adds that players who receive the transition tag usually have slowly developing market.

Josina Anderson of ESPN reports that the Bills are interested in Dolphins free agent TE Charles Clay.

Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News reported a month ago that the Bills are “known to be taking a hard look at” Clay, so the news that Buffalo remains interested in him doesn’t exactly come out of left field.

Miami applied their transition tag to Clay on Monday, which would pay him a salary of $7.071 million for the 2015 season if he ends up signing the tender.

This move gives the Dolphins the right of first refusal. However, if Clay receives an offer from another team like the Bills and the Dolphins refuse to match it, they would not receive any compensation.

Clay, 25, caught 58 passes for 605 yards receiving and three touchdowns over the course of 14 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 14 tight end out of 67 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Clay and the Bills as the news is available.
