Report: Bills Still Shopping Around For A No. 2 Quarterback, Kyle Orton An Option?

Update:

Adam Caplan reports that a name to keep an eye on in regards to the Bills search for a backup QB is veteran quarterback is Kyle Orton.

  • Caplan adds that the Bills want someone with experience behind starter E.J. Manuel.

Orton, 31, is clearly among the best available quarterbacks and is reportedly willing to play this season, despite talk that he could retire.

In 2013, Orton stepped in for Tony Romo after he suffered a season-ending back injury. Orton threw for 358 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in a loss to the Eagles.

ESPN’s Adam Caplan reports that the Buffalo Bills are still in the trade market for a backup quarterback.

Bills HC Doug Marrone recently expressed frustration regarding the team’s backup quarterback situation following last week’s preseason game.

“I’m not going to sit here and say I’m satisfied with the backup quarterback,” Marrone said, via the Buffalo News. “I’m not.”

Buffalo later signed veteran Jordan Palmer to a contract earlier in the week, but it appears as though they still aren’t comfortable with their backup options at this point in time.

The Bills have already cut Dennis Dixon and Thad Lewis in recent days, but it appears as though Jeff Tuel and Palmer could also be on the outs, depending on the Bills’ options.

Josh Freeman and Kyle Orton are currently the best available of quarterback in the free agent market in case they wanted to go that route. Although, they probably would have brought one of them in this week if they really had interest.

Ian Rapoport previously suggests Saints backup QB Luke McCown as someone to keep an eye on. Teams like the Vikings have decent quarterback depth, so there is at least a remote chance the Bills could reach out to them regarding former first-round pick Christian Ponder.
