Broncos Franchised WR Demaryius Thomas

Update:

———

ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirms the previous report that the Broncos will in fact be using their franchise tag on WR Demaryius Thomas Monday.

———-

Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that the Broncos are expected to use their “nonexclusive” tag on WR Demaryius Thomas on Monday.

This should come as no surprise, seeing as recent reports have said that there has no progress towards a long-term agreement and Thomas was headed for the franchise tag.

The “nonexclusive” tag would require a team that signed Thomas to a tender to surrender two first-round picks in the event the Broncos declined to match their offer.

Klis wouldn’t be surprised if Thomas protested the move by sitting out until the July 15 deadline.

The franchise tag will run them roughly $13 million guaranteed for the 2015 season. However, it will also buy them some additional time to negotiate a long-term contract.

Thomas, 27, is clearly one of the best receivers in the game and has earned a sizable raise from the Broncos.

Over the course of 16 games, Thomas caught 111 passes for 1,619 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 5 receiver in the league out of 110 qualifying players.

We have Thomas listed as the No. 4 player listed in our Top 100 Free Agents list.
