Report: Browns Did Not Conduct A Formal Interview With Johnny Manziel At The Combine

The Cleveland Browns have been mentioned as the team to watch regarding Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel for a number of months now.

However, recent indications are that the Browns could be looking in an entirely different direction.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that new Browns HC Mike Pettine mentioned that they did not conduct an a “formal interview” with Manziel at this year’s Scouting Combine.

NFL teams meet with a host of players during the Combine, so it’s actually somewhat noteworthy to hear that a team with an obvious quarterback need didn’t meet with one of the top prospects in this year’s draft class.

Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network mentioned a few weeks ago that he has spoken to sources who believe the Browns would like to take Fresno State QB Derek Carr with their second first-round pick and target a completely different position at No. 4 overall.

It’s hard to put much, if any, stock in rumors regarding the NFL draft at this point in the offseason. We’re still a week away from the start of free agency, so things will obviously change a lot once April rolls around, but it’s at the very least an interesting to note to consider.

For what it’s worth, we have Manziel going to the Raiders at No. 5 overall in our most recent 2014 NFL Mock Draft.
