Report: Browns Discussing Contract Extension With TE Jordan Cameron

Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland reports that the Browns have been in talks with TE Jordan Cameron regarding a long-term contract extension.

However, those talksĀ have been “going on without success,” according to Grossi.

The Browns are reportedly hoping to prevent another Alex Mack-situation by address Cameron’s contract now rather wait until months before he’s a free agent to get a deal in place.

Grossi believesĀ Cameron is a candidate for the franchise tag next year, depending on how talks progress in the coming months.

Cameron, 25, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is scheduled to make justĀ $645,000 for the 2014 season.

He’s coming off of a break season in which he caught 80 passes for 917 yards receiving and seven touchdowns over the course of 15 games.

While Cameron is clearly a weapon in the passing game, Pro Football Focus has him rated as one of the worst qualifying blocking tight ends in the league.

Even though the Browns would like to get a deal done now, it would probably make more sense for Cameron to wait until Jimmy Graham signs his next contract so that a better ceiling is in place prior to reaching an agreement.
