Report: Browns “Strongly Considering” Mitch Trubisky At No. 1 Overall

Update:

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, citing league sources, reports that the Browns are “strongly considering” UNC QB Mitch Trubisky at No. 1 overall.

On Thursday, Trubisky measured in at 6-2 1/8 at the NFL Combine, despite some speculation that he could come in shorter than the preferred 6-2.

During his three-year college career, Trubisky has thrown for 4,762 yards while completing 67.5 percent of his passes to go along with 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions over the course of 31 games. He’s also contributed another 439 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.

Mike Silver of NFL Media reports that the Browns will “likely add a young quarterback and a veteran” this offseason, per Marc Sessler.

However, Silver mentions that the quarterback prospect HC Hue Jackson likes is unlikely to be available to them at No. 12 overall.

“The guy he likes the most right now, Hue (Jackson) does not believe will be there at (No.) 12,” Silver said, per Sessler.

While Silver did say that he doesn’t think Jackson, Sashi Brown and Jimmy Haslam know which QB they want just yet, Jackson will reportedly be “very aggressive” in trying to get their quarterback situation sorted out.

The good news for the Browns is that they have plenty of draft capital to work with in case they want to move around the board.

Cleveland owns the top pick this year, but they could still pair their No. 12 overall pick with some other decent picks to move for their guy. The real x-factor is whether the 49ers, Bears and possibly the Jets are willing to take quarterbacks with their first-round picks.

The general consensus has been that there isn’t a quarterback prospect worthy of the No. 1 overall pick, but things can change and often do.

Mitch Trubisky, DeShone Kizer and DeShawn Watson have all come up as potential first-round picks and there has even been some recent buzz about Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes coming off the board in round one.

As for veteran options, the Browns have been linked to Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo and Tyrod Taylor, assuming they’re available.

We’ll have more regarding the Browns’ quarterback options as the news is available.
