Report: Browns Not Expected To Pursue QB Colin Kaepernick

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, citing a league source reports that the won’t pursue 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick, despite prior interest from HC Hue Jackson.

Last year, Jackson had interest in acquiring Kaepernick in a trade with the 49ers, but the ultimately elected to sign Robert Griffin III in free agency.

Cabot mentions that the Browns will still be in the market for a veteran quarterback in the coming weeks, but it sounds like it won’t be Kaepernick.

Cleveland has been tied to Patriots backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo for some time now, but a report from earlier in the day mentioned that they have no interest in trading him right. Of course, this could just be posturing from the Patriots in order to improve the offers for Garoppolo, but it’s clear that trading for him is going to be an expensive move for any team.

Other options the Browns could consider, according to Cabot, include Tyrod Taylor, Mike Glennon or A.J. McCarron.

Kaepernick, 29, is a former second-round pick of the 49ers back in 2010. He was in the third year of his seven-year, $126.97 million contract that included $61 million guaranteed when reached an agreement with the 49ers on a restructured deal.

Kaepernick’s new contract will give him the ability to void his deal in the coming months and test the open market.

In 2016, Kaepernick has completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 2,241 yards and 16 touchdowns and four interceptions, while adding 468 yards rushing. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 27 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Kaepernick and where he’ll be playing in 2017 as the news is available.
