Report: Browns Tried To Trade For Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Browns made an attempt to trade for Cardinals veteran WR Larry Fitzgerald last month.

  • Cabot mentions that the Browns were just one of a number of teams that called the Cardinals regarding Fitzgerald.

The Cardinals were ultimately able to reach an agreement with Fitzgerald on a new two-year, $22 million contract, which should give him a chance at finishing out his career in Arizona.

The Browns are clearly in need of a number one receiver, so it’s not surprising that they explored some options in the trade market to find upgrades at the position. However, Fitzgerald would have came with a huge contract and is already in his thirties.

It probably would make more sense for the Browns to target a younger receiver that can develop with the rest of their team versus spending big to win now.

Cleveland has shown a great deal of interest in former Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe in recent days, so this is something to keep an eye on in the coming days.

Fitzgerald, 31, finished the 2014 season with 63 catches for 784 yards and two touchdowns over the course of 14 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 31 receiver out of 110 qualifying players.

We’ll post more details regarding the Browns’ attempt to acquire Fitzgerald as they’re available.
