Buccaneers & Eric Wright Reach An Agreement On A Restructured Deal

Rick Stroud reports that the Buccaneers have and CB Eric Wright have reached an agreement on a restructured contract that will keep him in Tampa Bay for another season.

  • Ian Rapoport reports that the Wright loses the $7.75 million in guarantees that was included in his previous deal.
  • Wright’s new contract is worth $1.5 million and he has a “good chance” to earn up to $3 million by reaching incentives, per Rapoport.
  • Mike Garafolo adds that his contract doesn’t include any guaranteed money.

Wright reportedly met with the GM Mark Dominik and HC Greg Schiano about returning to the team, according to Stephen Holder.

This contract looks to be similar to the one CB Nnamdi Asomugha signed with the 49ers, but Rapoport adds that Wright’s incentives are “more in-reach.”

Jason La Canfora reports that the Buccaneers didn’t agree to restructure the contract of CB Eric Wright today and adds that his future with the team remains in “flux.”

According to Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times, it “appears likely” that the Buccaneers and CB Eric Wright will agree to a restructured contract that will allow him to remain with the team.

Wright reportedly met with GM Mark Dominik and head coach Greg Schiano on Tuesday to discuss his future with the team.

It wasn’t all that long ago that Wright looked like an obvious release candidate, but it seems as though the Bucs are willing to keep him around at a reduced rate.

Wright, 27, signed a five-year deal worth $38 million that included $15.5 million guaranteed with Tampa Bay last year. This was a surprising move by the Bucs given that Wright hadn’t done all that much to justify such a deal in the previous years.

We should know more regarding the situation later in the week.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have put CB Eric Wright on the trading block.

The Buccaneers caught a break after Wright was suspended for four games for violating the league’s policy against performance-enhancing substances. This in turn eliminated the guarantees included in his contract.

With Tampa Bay already in the process of finding a new cornerback, it makes sense for them to gauge the level of interest in Wright, but it’s doubtful that they’ll be able to find any team willing to part with draft compensation for him at point in time.

The Bucs are the odds on favorites to trade for Jets CB Darrelle Revis, but progress has been reportedly slow and there are upgrades still available in the free agent market. If they’re unable to find a trade partner for Wright, it seems very likely that they would ultimately decide to cut him loose.
