Update:

Kent Somers reports that although the Cardinals and CB Patrick Peterson have made progress towards an agreement, “significant obstacles” remain.

Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports, citing multiple sources, is reporting that the Cardinals are “close” to an agreement with CB Patrick Peterson on a new contract.

  • Getlin adds that there are still some hurdles to clear before a deal is done, but there is a “good chance” something gets done in the near future.

Cardinals GM Steve Keim told Tom Pelissero of USA Today that they are committed to signing Peterson to a long-term extension, so this news doesn’t come as a huge surprise.

“We’ve made a concerted effort,” Keim said of trying to lock up Peterson. “We’ve been in negotiations. We’ve had some great talks with Joel Segal. We’re going to stay aggressive.”

Peterson, 24, has quickly established himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the league and is even in the discussion for the best athlete in the game.

He’ll make $2,888,114 for the upcoming season and another $10.081 million in 2015 if he plays out the season under the fifth-year option.

Last year, Peterson appeared in all 16 games and totaled 42 tackles, three interceptions and 13 pass defenses while contributing 198 punt return yards. Pro Football Focus rated Peterson the No. 16 cornerback in the 2013 season.

We’ll have more regarding Peterson and a possible extension as the news is available.
