ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Cardinals free agent RB Rashard Mendenhall is, in fact, retiring from the NFL.

Mendenhall seemed to imply that he calling it a career in a Huffington Post column published about a month ago, but it was hard to say at the time if this was what he was referring to.

“That day I sat on my couch two years ago was the very next day after I tore my ACL in week 17. The journey I envisioned is the two years of rebuilding that would follow. And as I write this, today is the day that the journey is over and I am fully at peace. Eagerly looking to a new way, which lies ahead.”

Mendenhall, 26, appeared in 15 games for the Cardinals last season and totaled 687 yards rushing on 217 carries (3.2 YPC) and contributed another 134 yards receiving.

His best season came back in 2010 with the Steelers when he ran for 1,274 yards and 13 touchdowns while helping them reach the Super Bowl.
