Cardinals Hire Todd Bowles As Defensive Coordinator

The Arizona Cardinals announced that they’ve hired Todd Bowles as their next defensive coordinator.

This move has been rumored to be coming for days now, so it’s not all that shocking that Bowles landed in Arizona. The Cardinals were not going to keep Ray Horton on their staff after they passed him up in favor of Bruce Arians and Bowles was no longer a part of the Eagles plans.

Mike Garafolo reports that the Philadelphia Eagles have released defensive coordinator Todd Bowles from his current contract.

It’s been widely reported for days now that Bowles will be headed to the Cardinals, so there should be some relating to the subject in the near future.

Kyndra Aubin of Arizona Sports 620 reports that the Cardinals have officially parted ways with defensive coordinator Ray Horton.

The team reportedly informed Horton that new head coach Bruce Arians preferred Eagles defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

It’s worth noting that Bowles is still under contract with the Eagles, but that obviously could change in the near future.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that a source has confirmed that Cardinals DC Ray Horton is the “frontrunner” to land the Browns defense coordinator position.

Horton is still under contract with the Cardinals, but that should be cleared up in the near future given that Arizona passed him over in favor of Bruce Arians for the head coaching position.

There has already been talk that Cleveland is prepared to move to a 3-4 defense next year, so the idea of adding Horton fits. His addition would round a well respected group of coordinators now that Norv Turner is running their offense next season.

Mike Silver reports that a source “who knows” has informed him that the Cardinals will part ways with defensive coordinator Ray Horton and replace him with Todd Bowles.

Bowles was the defensive coordinator for the Eagles last season and this coincides with previous reports that new head coach Bruce Arians would like to bring Bowles with him to Arizona.

Horton, who was a finalist for the Cardinals’ job, is reportedly furious that he was passed over in favor of Arians. Several reports have suggested that minority candidates share Horton’s frustration after 12 of the 13 available NFL jobs have gone to non-minority candidates.

Horton is considered one of the best defensive coordinators in the league, so there’s a good chance he finds a new job in the near future.

    • Possible. He’s ran a 3-4 while in Arizona, so he would have to be willing to reconsider his approach given the Bears current roster.
