Vincent Bonsignore of the Los Angeles Daily News, citing multiple sources, reports that the Chargers are considering rebranding the franchise if they end up relocating to Los Angeles.
According to Bonsignore, this would be a complete rebrand for the franchise including asking fans to pick a new name, logo and color scheme for the team.
Assuming this is accurate, it would be a very disappointing end to the Chargers’ franchise. The Bolts have some of the best uniforms in the league and have a history that dates back to 1960.
From an ownership perspective, it could help them appeal to a new market and fanbase if they end up joining the Rams in Inglewood. There are serious questions about how L.A. would support two struggling franchises after going decades without a team, so there could be serious competition between the Rams and Chargers for supporters and season-ticket holders and a rebrand could give Dean Spanos‘ franchise an edge.
All things considered, I still rather see the Chargers continue to exist the NFL than see a newly branded team enter the league.
Earlier in the day, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported that Spanos “is resigned to the fact he must move his team to Los Angeles during next month’s window to do so and has every intention of doing just that.”
