Report: Chiefs & Justin Houston “Worlds Apart” On A Contract Extension

Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports reports that the Chiefs and OLB Justin Houston are “worlds apart” in regarding to a contract extension.

According to Getlin, the two sides have been discussing a contract extension for nearly a year now, but it appears as though Houston with either reach the open market or be franchised following the season.

Getlin mentions that if the Chiefs want to lock him up to an extension right now, they would probably have to offer him a deal close to the contract J.J. Watt received from the Houston Texans.

Watt set the bar really high for pass rushers when he signed a eight-year, $108.88 million contract that included $51.8 million guaranteed.

Kansas City would be looking at paying him close to $13.116 million, according to Albert Breer‘s early projections. However, they have made it clear that keeping Houston long-term is priority for them, even after they used a first-round pick on OLB Dee Ford.

Houston, 25, is in the final year of his rookie contract and will make just $1.431 million for the 2014 season.

Houston has appeared in seven games this season and recorded 28 tackles, 10 sacks, and a forced fumble. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2 outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense this year.
