Report: Chiefs Still Discussing Extension With QB Alex Smith, No Deal Imminent

Alex Marvez of Fox Sports reports that the Chiefs remain in contract talks with QB Alex Smith regarding a long-term extension.

However, an agreement does not appear to be imminent at this point in time, according to Marvez.

Smith recently mentioned that he has no interest in signing a similar contract to the one Andy Dalton received from the Bengals a few weeks ago.

“I want to get something that’s right that I’m going to play out, absolutely, and that’s definitely a focus of mine,” Smith said, via USA TODAY.

“We’re on the record. That’s a tough question,” Smith said in response to whether or not he would sign Dalton’s contract if the Chiefs offered it. “Certainly, I think it’s a tough thing. I look at both Andy and Kap and they’re both on their rookie deals. They’re both second-round picks in the new rookie wage scale, so what were their salaries? It’s a very different situation for me.

Dalton’s extension adds six years to his current deal and will give him the opportunity to make as much as $115 million in total. Although, it’s unlikely that he’ll come close to receiving all of the money included in this contract.

The situation between the Chiefs should be fascinating to watch in the coming months as Smith is in line to be the best available quarterback next year and there are questions about all of the team’s current backup options.

The franchise tag will be costly for the Chiefs, but it would at least buy them more time to work out a long-term agreement.

Smith, 30, is entering the final year of his current deal and will make $7.5 million for the 2014 season.

In his first season with the Chiefs, Smith led them to playoffs and played great in their first-round matchup against the Colts.  Smith also set career highs in passing yards with 3,313, rushing yards (431) and touchdowns (23) while only throwing seven interceptions.
