Update: Brian Urlacher Is A “Viable Option” For The Cowboys Depending On Their Young Players

Update:

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, reports that veteran LB Brian Urlacher is a “viable option” for the Cowboys in the event that young players like Anthony Hitchens and DeVonte Holloman fail to replace Sean Lee this summer.

Florio adds that this idea isn’t “as much of a long shot as it’s being portrayed.”

Earlier in the day, ESPN’s Ed Werder reported that the Cowboys are evaluating “all options” at the middle linebacker position as they try to find a replacement for Lee.

  • Werder added that Dallas has even considered the idea of signing veterans such as Brian Urlacher and Jonathan Vilma.
  • However, team sources have characterized their interest in the two players as “not much.”
  • Werder expects the Cowboys to employ two-player platoon at middle linebacker.

Urlacher, 36, retired last year after spending 13 seasons with the Bears. He found little to no interest as a free agent in 2013, even though the Bears did extend him a contract offer.

It’s honestly hard to imagine him ever playing again, even though he is more than familiar with Rod Marinelli’s defense scheme and could provide them with some veteran leadership as well.

Vilma, 32, hasn’t found any reported interest the entire offseason, but there could end up being increased interest in free agents now that it’s June 1 and signing players won’t count against a team’s 2015 compensatory formula.

It’s worth mentioning that Vilma has missed 25 games over the course of the past three seasons.
