Cowboys DL Josh Brent Retires

Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports reports that Cowboys DL Josh Brent is retiring from the NFL to focus on getting his off-field issues under control.

“This is the right decision for me, and something that I have given a lot of thought to,” said Brent in a statement. “I am at a point where my main focus is about getting priorities in my life in order. Priorities more important than football. Doing the right things in life are more important than football. I love the game very much. I love my teammates, but this is the right thing for me to do.”

  • Ed Werder suspects that Brent decision to retire could be a tactical move to avoid league discipline with no Cowboys action being necessary.

Brent, 25, has tested positive for marijuana twice since June 19, which led to his recent arrest just a few weeks ago.

The Cowboys stood by Brent, despite his intoxicated manslaughter charge for a car crash that resulted in the death of teammate Jerry Brown. Brent is awaiting trail for this case.

The NFL was reportedly still reviewing the case as of last week, but it appears as though Brent intends to get his life in order before deciding whether or not to return to the league.
