Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports reports that the Dallas Cowboys have begun the process of reworking some contracts in order to free up some much needed cap space.
According to Garafolo, the first two players up are ILB Sean Lee and CBÂ Orlando Scandrick.
Dallas reportedly converted their base salaries into signing bonuses that are likely to be prorated over the course of the contract.
- Brian McIntyre mentions that the Cowboys could free up $6.8 million in cap space using the “standard restructuring formula.“
Garafolo adds that the Cowboys are expected to continue working on some of their contract, however there is no word regarding DE DeMarcus Ware who represents some of the largest cap saving available.
Lee, 27, signed a seven-year, $42.63 million contract that included $16.1 million guaranteed with the Cowboys last August. He has a base salary of $5.5 million coming his way in 2014 to go along with a cap figure of $7.5 million.
Scandrick, 27, signed a two-year extension with the team back in December of last year. He is now under contract through the 2018 season and has a 2014 base salary of $4.5 million to go along with a cap figure of $6.6 million.
Dallas is currently projected to be close to $18 million over the salary cap and that’s after the news that it increased to $133 million for the 2014 season.
This figures to be a very busy week for the Cowboys.
