Report: Cowboys Not Sold On DeMarco Murray, Could Target A RB At Trade Deadline

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the Dallas Cowboys are no longer sold on the idea of DeMarco Murray being their franchise and have already held discussions regarding their options at the position.

  • According to Rapoport, the Cowboys could look to make a move at the upcoming trade deadline.
  • Adam Schefter reports that the Cowboys are projected to be $31 million over salary cap next year.
  • An NFL executive referred to their situation as “a train wreck.
  • Ed Werder reports that two Cowboys’ sources have informed him that they have no knowledge about the team being skeptical of Murray or the possibility of pursuing a trade.
  • Bryan Broaddus also reports that sources have refuted Rapoport’s report regarding Murray.

Murray, 25, suffered a knee sprain last weekend and is expected to miss Sunday’s game against the Eagles. In his first two seasons in the league, Murray has missed nine games, so although he’s looked pretty good at times, it’s hard to rely on a guy who hasn’t been able to stay in the lineup.

Murray has tallied a pretty good yards-per-carry figure over the course of his career, but this could be an indication the Cowboys would prefer to implement a two-back system moving forward. This is also somewhat telling with regards to their opinion of rookie Joseph Randle as well.

Speculative running back options could include:

  • Lions RB Mikel LeShoure
  • Raiders RB Darren McFadden
  • Saints RB Mark Ingram
  • Texans RB Ben Tate
  • Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio mentions that Dallas reportedly had McFadden at the top of their board in 2008 draft board.
