Report: Cowboys Want To Keep Bill Callahan As A Safety Net Should Jason Garrett Be Fired

ESPN’s Ed Werder has been informed by a source that the reason the Cowboys have denied requests by the Ravens and Browns to interview recently demoted Bill Callahan is because the Cowboys view him as a potential interim head coach should Jason Garrett be fired.

As reported yesterday, the Cowboys are expected to hire Scott Linehan to handle the play-calling duties. Linehan has served as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions dating back to 2009.

Jerry Jones replaced Garrett with Callahan as play-caller beginning last season, but will now be stripped of that responsibility, and serve as team’s offensive line coach.

Bill Callahan has expressed his displeasure with the changes, and it is difficult to envision a scenario in which Callahan remains with the team beyond his current contract which expires after next season.

This report also suggests that Cowboys management is losing patience with HC Jason Garrett.  Installing a contingency plan before the offseason shows just how hot Garrett’s seat is.

Bill Callahan has previously served as Head Coach for the Oakland Raiders from 2002-2003 and at the University of Nebraska from 2004-2007.
