ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported that CB Darrelle Revis and the New England Patriots reached agreement on a one-year deal.

Contract Details:

Adam Schefter reported last night that Revis got a one-year deal worth $12 million, but the contract includes a 2015 option.

  • Mike Garafolo reports that Revis’ deal is really a two-year contract worth $32 million that includes $11.5 million guaranteed and a second year is a club option for $20 million.

Tom Pelissero first reported that Revis’ contract with the Patriots included the 2015 option for $20 million.

  • Pelissero adds that if the Patriots exercise option before end of 2014 league year, Revis would receive a $12 million roster bonus April 1, 2015 and have a base of $7.5 million in 2015.
  • Pelissero adds that Revis got a $10 million signing bonus and has a $1.5 million of his 2014 base salary guaranteed.
  • Revis can make $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses.

Albert Breer reported last night that the Patriots are open to a long-term deal with Revis at some point, so this could be something to watch over the next year.

  • Jason La Canfora reports that the Patriots were the team he wanted to sign with after being released by the Buccaneers.
  • Mike Florio suspects that the news of Revis reaching out the Jets was an attempt to create a bidding war between the them and the Patriots.
  • Florio also wonders whether or not Revis’ agreement with the Patriots prevents them from franchising him next year.

This is a great point by Florio given that his last contract with the Jets included a clause that prevented the franchise tag, so his agent is clearly aware of the value of this type of contract language.

So much for the reports that Revis could return to the Jets. He lasted close to four hours as a free agent.

In his previous contract, Revis would have made $16 million, so this represents a loss of $4 million. It’s interesting to see that he signed just a one-year deal, but he could very well hit it big as a free agent next, assuming the Patriots don’t franchise him.

$12 million is still a lot of money for a single, so this is likely a case of the market correcting his salary seeing as the Buccaneers could find someone willing to take him at the $16 million figure.

This is a heck of a counter move by New England after losing Aqib Talib to the Broncos.

Revis, 28, totaled 50 tackles, one sack, two interceptions and two forced fumbles over the the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has Revis rated as the No. 1 cornerback in the league last season.
