Report: DeMarcus Ware Won’t Take Pay Cut Because He Expects To Do Well As FA

Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas mentions that the issue between the Cowboys and DE DeMarcus Ware is that he believes he can “get a payday in free agency” if they were to cut him loose.

  • Clarence Hill reported earlier in the day that Ware isn’t willing to accept a pay cut, but is at least willing to listen to what the Cowboys are thinking.

Dallas reportedly informed Ware that they would like him to reduce his salary to be back with them and have suggested to the media that they are willing to part ways if it comes to that.

The Cowboys have worked to get under the salary cap in recent, but they still have almost no cap space available to fill out their roster.

Should Ware become available, he would probably fair better than some of the other veteran defensive ends in this year’s free agent class.

Ware, 31, has a base salary of $12.25 million next season to go along with a 2015 salary of $13.75 million. Should the Cowboys elect to release Ware outright, they would gain $7.432 million in cap space, which would go a long way towards giving them some flexibility in free agency.

Last year, Ware totaled 40 tackles, six sacks, one interception and a fumble recovery over the course of 13 games.
