Report: Dolphins Could Make A “Serious Attempt” To Sign Ndamukong Suh

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins have in fact been discussing the idea of making a “serious attempt” at signing free agent DT Ndamukong Suh in the coming days.

According to Jackson, at least one “key from office member” is in favor of pursuing him.

Jackson admits that Miami will face stiff competition and would need to clear more cap room to feel good about their chances.

The Dolphins have some players who could be cap casualties like WR Mike Wallace, LB Dannell Ellerbe, LB Philip Wheeler, DT Randy Starks and P Brandon Fields

Jackson writes that releasing these players would free up $23.6 million in additional cap space, and if they were to designate Wallace and Wheeler as post-June 1 cuts, that number increases to $38.6 million in space.

This would be a big overhaul for the Dolphins and it could impact future negotiations with players like QB Ryan Tannehill, but it is possible for Miami to land Suh if they really wanted to.

On Monday, Ian Rapoport referred to the Dolphins as a “wildcard” to keep an eye for Suh in the coming weeks.

ESPN analyst and former Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik also said that he could see the Dolphins having a “real shot” at Suh, based on the fact that they don’t have an income tax in Florida.

“The last team I would say has a chance is the Miami Dolphins,” Dominik said, per Adam Beasley. “State taxes are a big part of it. When you are talking about state taxes and you’re in Tennessee, Texas or Florida, and you’ve got that up your sleeve, any one of those teams has a real shot. Miami also could be another team that I could see being interested in Ndamukong Suh.

It’s going to be really interesting to see how things play out with Suh, and whether he looks for the best opportunity to win, or the most money.

Suh, 27, is arguably the best available player in this year’s free agent class and should set the bar for defensive linemen when all is said and done.

In 2014, he recorded 51 tackles, 8.5 sacks and three pass defenses over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 3 defensive tackle in the league.

We have Suh currently ranked as the No. 2 player in our Top 100 Free Agents List.
