Report: Dolphins Exploring Trade Options For Mike Wallace

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Miami Dolphins are exploring trade options for WR Mike Wallace.

  • According to Rapoport, the idea to consider trading Wallace is not just based on his play, but also his fit in their locker room.
  • Rapoport adds that it’s unclear whether anyone would be willing to trade for Wallace at this point in time.

Regarding the trade rumor, Miami VP of football operations Mike Tannenbaum said that they like Wallace, but wouldn’t comment on the report. SiriusXM:

Wallace impacts the game without having the ball in his hands,” Tannenbaum said while appearing on Sirius XM NFL Radio. “We like him, but we will not comment on trade rumors.

While there has been a lot of talk that the Dolphins could release Wallace outright, Miami appears to be considering all of their options at this point in time.

  • Armando Salguero mentions that, based on what he’s hearing, it’s his educated guess that Wallace won’t be with the Dolphins for 2015 season.
  • Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported earlier in the week that the Dolphins have been discussing a pay cut with Wallace in recent days.
  • However, Jackson mentioned the two sides have some time to figure this out before Wallace’s salary becomes guaranteed on March 15. Jackson adds that this situation “could go either way.”

Wallace’s 2014 season reportedly ended with him asking out of the game, and there were already concerns about his work ethic and overall production, which has led some to suggest that Wallace could be a cap casualty.

Wallace, 28, signed a five-year, $60 million contract that included $30 million guaranteed with Miami back in 2013, so it clearly disappointing that this is something being talked about just a few years into this agreement.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Wallace outright would free up $2.5 million in cap space next year, but would also create $9.6 million in dead money.

However, trading Wallace would boost their cap saving to $5.5 million and reduce the dead money to $6.6 million, according to OTC’s cap calculator.

This season, Wallace caught 67 passses for 862 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the N0. 53 receiver out of 110 qualifying players.
