Dolphins & Ryan Tannehill Discussing A Seven-Year, $105M Deal?

Update:

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has spoken to “multiple sources with knowledge” who have said that the Dolphins and QB Ryan Tannehill haven’t been the process of negotiating a long-term contract.

According to one source, discussions haven’t started between the two parties, but he did express some optimism that talks could get started  at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Dave Hyde of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that the Dolphins have discussed the “framework” of a new contract for QB Ryan Tannehill that could be worth close to $105 million over the course of seven years.

According to Hyde, the contract is likely to be an incentives-based with just the first two years of the agreement guaranteed, and an annual salary of $15 million.

The obvious comparisons for this kind of contract are Bengals QB Andy Dalton and 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick.

A few weeks ago, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald mentioned that he came away with the impression that Miami will begin working on a new contract for Tannehill after speaking to Executive VP of Football Operations Mike Tannenbaum.

The Dolphins have other options at their disposal in regards to Tannehill such as picking up his fifth-year option and possibly franchising him down the road if he continues to develop.

Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald previously reported that many around the league believe it’s a “foregone conclusion” that the Dolphins will exercise Tannehill’s fifth-year option, which should come as no surprise.

Tannehill’s option, it would run the Dolphins close to $15 million for the 2016 season. However, this figure is non-guaranteed and would not prevent them from negotiating a long-term extension.

Tannehill, 26, is finishing up his four-year, $12.668 million rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $660,000 to go along with a $1.457 million roster bonus next season.

In 2014, Tannehill threw for 4,045 yards while completing 66.4 percent of his passes to go along with 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 11 quarterback out of 39 qualifying players last year.
