Report: Raiders “Closing In On” A Deal With LT Donald Penn

Update:

Ian Rapoport reports that free agent OT Donald Penn is closing in on a deal with the Raiders.

  • Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports mentions that he would be “surprised” if Penn does not sign with the Raiders.
  • La Canfora mentions that the opportunity to play left tackle is “very enticing” for Penn.
  • However, the Redskins are still in the mix, according to La Canfora.

Penn, 30, was cut loose by the Buccaneers after they signed Anthony Collins last week. He’s clearly the best available left tackle, which happens to be the biggest need for the cap-rich Raiders.

Pro Football Focus has Penn rated as the No. 30 offensive tackle in the league last season. We have Penn listed as the No. 6 best available player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.

John Keim reports that free agent OT Donald Penn is at Redskins Park and will meet with the team Sunday and Monday.

Recent reports have mentioned that the Redskins have been in contact with Penn regarding a deal.

  • Keim mentions that if Penn is signed, it would most likely lead to the Redskins releasing RT Tyler Polumbus.
  • Parting ways with Polumbus would free up $2.5 million in cap space for the Redskins, according to Keim.

The Raiders also have interest in Penn to go along with a huge need at left tackle.

Jason La Canfora reports that free agent OT Donald Penn headed to visit the Redskins now that his meeting with the Raiders has concluded.

  • La Canfora adds that Penn is already in negotiations with Washington to play right tackle.
  • Ian Rapoport first reported that Penn has scheduled a visit with the Redskins for Saturday.

Penn, 31, is coming off of a very poor season for Tampa Bay, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s the best available player at an important position.

Oakland wound up voiding their contract with Rodger Saffold, which leaves them in desperate need of a left tackle. Penn has deal with a knee injuries in the past, so there could be issues regarding a physical with him as well.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the former Buccaneers LT Donald Penn is flying to Oakland tonight to visit with the Raiders.

  • Schefter adds that the Redskins have interest in Penn as well.
  • Jason La Canfora reports that the Redskins are showing “plenty of interest” in Penn.

Both the Raiders and Redskins immediately came up as speculative options for the Penn after the Buccaneers cut him loose earlier in the day.
