Report: Eagles Have Pro Bowl G Evan Mathis On The Trading Block

Update:

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Evan Mathis agent, Drew Rosenhaus , approached the Eagles regarding a contract extension at this year’s NFL Combine, but the Eagles suggested a trade instead.

  • McLane adds that the Eagles haven’t found “many nibbles” regarding a trade for Mathis.
  • Philadelphia reportedly really likes backup G Allen Barbre as a replacement.

Jason La Canfora reports that the Eagles are looking for a third-round pick in return for Mathis, but they may possibly accept a fourth-round pick.

  • La Canfora adds that Philadelphia could elect to hold on to him if they can’t find a reasonable return.

We’ll have more regarding Mathis and a potential trade as the news is available.

Ian Rapoport reports that the Eagles have placed veteran G Evan Mathis on the trading block.

  • Rapoport adds that Philadelphia has made Mathis available given that he’s 32 years old and wants a new contract after a breakout season.

On top of that, Mathis is set to make $5.15 million for the 2014 season, so the Eagles are clearly looking to get out from under some of their larger contracts.

Eagles HC Chip Kelly said that he hasn’t spoken to Mathis yet, but referred to him as a “lunch-pail guy.

“Evan has been outstanding from Day 1 since I’ve been here,” said Kelly, per the Jeff McLane.

Mathis, 32, still has three years remaining on his five-year, $25 million contract that includes $7 million guaranteed.

Last year, he appeared in all 16 games for the Eagles and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 1 guard in the league by a wide margin.

  1. Cole makes more money, and he’s wearing down, so they should trade or release him not Mathis. They better not trade Mathis. He’s far more important to the o-line than Cole is to the d-line.
