Mark Eckel of NJ.com, citing a person familiar with the Eagles’ offseason plans, reports that the Eagles are “going to try” to trade up for Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.
Eckel spoke to a source who said it’s not going to be easy for the Eagles to pull off this trade given that they currently have the No. 20 overall pick, and Mariota could end up being a top-two selection.
“From No. 20, it’s certainly not going to be easy,” said Eckel’s source. “It’s probably going to take moving up twice to do it. There’s going to be some wheeling and dealing involved.”
The source added that he’s not sure if they can make this kind of move up the board, but he added “they’re going to try.”
The early consensus is that Florida State QB Jameis Winston is the top quarterback in this year’s draft class, but Mariota is certainly in the discussion.
There probably isn’t a better fit for him that the Eagles seeing as Chip Kelly previously coached a few years ago at Oregon.
Mariota has said in recent weeks that he would really enjoy being reunited with his old head coach.
“Obviously, [with] my relationship with Coach Kelly, it’d be a lot of fun to be a part of that offense and be a part of that team,” Mariota said.
Mariota finished his final year at Oregon by leading them to an appearance in the National Title game and managed to win a Heisman Trophy in the process.
Mariota threw for 10,796 yards while completing 66.8 percent of his passes to go along with 105 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions over the course of three years at Oregon.
