Still Looking Like CB Nnamdi Asomugha Is Done In Philadelphia

Update:

Jason Cole tweets that the Eagles and CB Nnamdi Asomugha are still on track for an “amicable separation.”

Update:

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk writes that the Philadelphia Eagles could always look to trade CB Nnamdi Asomugha seeing as they would still have to pay him $4 million if they were to release him.

Florio adds that the Eagles could always agree to pay Asomugha the $4 million that he’s owed, but trade him for a “late-round pick.

Philadelphia wouldn’t get a compensatory pick if they were to release Asomugha, so this would at least ensure they received some amount of compensation for him. The Eagles made a similar move last year when they dealt Asante Samuel to Atlanta for a seventh-round pick.

This is just a speculative option, but it’s at least interesting to consider.

Update:

Jeff McLane tweets that the Eagles are saying that CB Nnamdi Asomugha will not be released.

Geoff Mosher adds that adds that although Asomugha won’t be released today, the overall impression is that he will eventually be cut loose.

Albert Breer and Ian Rapoport have confirmed that Philadelphia isn’t planning on making a move regarding Asomugha today.

Howard Eskin has been informed that the Philadelphia Eagles will release CB Nnamdi Asomugha at some point today.

Asomugha, 31, signed a five-year deal with the Eagles back in July of 2011, but never came close to the expectations that come with that kind of a contract. He was set to make a $15 million base salary this season, so it’s hardly surprising to see the Eagles pass on him that kind of money.

Philadelphia will still have to pay him the $4 million remaining in guarantees, but they still free up $11 million and will not be on the hook for his remaining salaries of $12 million and $10.8 million.

Asomugha will still find interest on the open market and could end up being a decent value, assuming of course that he can still play at high.
