Report: Seahawks Sign QB Brady Quinn

Jason La Canfora reports that the Seahawks will sign QB Brady Quinn to be Russell Wilson‘s backup this season.

Matt LeinartSeneca Wallaceand Tyler Thigpen also tried out for the job on Monday, but apparently Quinn was able to separate himself from the pack. Some believed Leinart had the best shot at winning the job given his ties to head coach Pete Carroll and the players he was competing with.

Previous speculation mentioned that Seattle may target a quarterback with a similar skill set to that of Wilson’s, but it doesn’t appear as though this was a major consideration.

Update:

According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, the Seahawks were “most impressed” with Brady Quinn’s tryout on Monday and are expected to pursue him as their backup quarterback.

  • Mike Garafolo is hearing that Quinn is likely to be signed as well.

Matt LeinartSeneca Wallaceand Tyler Thigpen also tried out for the job on Monday.

We’ll have more as the news becomes available.

Update:

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Seahawks are expected to hold off on making a decision regarding the four quarterbacks who worked out for them on Monday.

  • Ed Werder mentioned Seattle will most likely be deciding between Quinn and Leinart with Leinart getting the tie breaker.

Update:

Mike Garafolo of  USA Today reports that the Seahawks will bring in free agent quarterbacks Brady Quinn, Matt Leinart, Seneca Wallace, and Tyler Thigpen for a workout on Monday.

Seattle is obviously looking to find a backup quarterback for Russell Wilson after they recently sent Matt Flynn to the Raiders for draft compensation.

All of these players have been linked to the job in recent weeks, along with Vince Young, who apparently wasn’t extended an offer to workout. It appears as though the player with the best workout gets the job, but there have been rumors that they may prefer a quarterback who’s capable of running the read-option.

We’ll have more on this topic in the coming days.

Update:

Jason La Canfora reports that “everything still points” to the Seahawks signing free agent QB Tyler Thigpen.

La Canfora expects Thigpen to visit and sign a deal with Seattle at some point in the near future.

Thigpen has seemed like most likely target for the Seahwaks, but both Vince Young and Matt Leinart have been tossed out as speculative options as well.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Seattle Seahawks have free agent Tyler Thigpen on their “short list” of backup quarterback options.

The Seahawks have agreed to trade Matt Flynn to the Raiders for two draft picks, so they’re clearly in need of a backup quarterback. Previous reports indicated that the Seahawks would like to find a backup who possesses a similar skill set to that of Russell Wilson.

Thigpen, 28, would not only be a cheap option for Seattle to consider, but he also has experience running the read-option.

Leinart played for head coach Pete Carroll while at USC, but the Seahawks have passed on him numerous times since Carroll took the job with Seattle. He’s a vastly different quarterback than either Wilson or Thigpen, so we’ll have to see if this is actually something that they’re considering.

  1. Vince Young would be a perfect fit for a team needing a quarterback. … He is
Motivated, Hungry and Determined to prove he can still play this game at a high
level…. and that he can lead a team deep into the playoffs and possibly to the
SuperBowl… Vince Young is salary-cap friendly “Low Risk – High Reward” type of
guy… He’s a wise choice for the smart Team Owner/GM….
