Report: Geno Smith Outplaying Mark Sanchez

Rich Cimini of ESPN New York reports that second-round pick QB Geno Smith has outplayed Mark Sanchez through the first week of training camp.

Cimini adds that Smith has pulled even with Sanchez and may be slightly ahead of him in the Jets’ quarterback competition.

“He can do more” than Sanchez, said one veteran.

Sanchez has continued to struggle with turnovers, which has resulted in interceptions in each of the last two practices. Smith, on the other hand, has yet to throw a single interception in any of the team first five practices.

HC Rex Ryan is reportedly “intrigued” by Smith’s running ability and mentioned that they could consider employing some wildcat and read-option looks this season.

There is still plenty of time for Sanchez to secure the starting job, but he’ll need to put some distance between himself and Smith to feel confident in being the Week 1 starter.
