Giants Officially Name Dave Gettleman New GM

Update:

The New York Giants announced Thursday that they’ve officially hired Dave Gettleman as their new general manager.

Given where we are as a team, we thought it was important to bring in someone with experience as a General Manager and a proven track record,” president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch said. “Dave’s experience is unparalleled. He did an outstanding job as general manager in Carolina, and he was vital to our success during his tenure here. Dave is going to bring his own approach to our organization in how we draft and acquire players through free agency.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is hearing that the Giants are expected to name Dave Gettleman their new GM.

  • According to La Canfora, the Giants are in the process of informing other candidates that they are hiring Gettleman as GM and an official announcement is expected soon.
  • La Canfora adds that the Giants remain “very high” on the internal candidates they interviewed but Gettleman has prior GM experience.

The Giants have interviewed Gettleman, interim GM Kevin Abrams (NFLTR), ESPN analyst Louis Riddick (NFLTR), and VP of player evaluation Marc Ross (NFLTR) for the position.

Reports have said for a few weeks now that Gettleman was one of the top candidates to watch for the Giants, given that he previously worked for the team and did a good job in terms of bringing talent during his time as the Panthers’ GM.

If the Giants do, in fact, settle on Gettleman, Panthers DC Steve Wilks could get a serious look for their head-coaching job because of his reputation and their history together.

Gettleman, 66, began his executive career with the Giants pro personnel director back in 1999. He eventually worked his way up to senior pro personnel analyst before departing to become the Panthers GM in 2013.Carolina surprisingly made the decision to fire Gettleman this summer, even though he did a pretty good job of not only getting them out of a terrible cap situation but so bringing some quality talent to build out their roster.

During his four years with the Panthers, the team posted a record of 40-23-1, which includes three playoff appearances and one trip to the Super Bowl.
