Giants Trading For Bills WR Mike Williams “Not Going To Happen”

Update:

Jordan Raanan of NJ.com reports that the Giants will not be trading for Bills WR Mike Williams, despite a report from this morning which mentioned that they have “some” interest in the idea.

According to Raanan, the Giants are interested in parting with draft picks and paying Williams salary, which will increase from $1 million to over $5 million next year.

Raanan mentions that New York is more likely to move forward with Preston Parker as one of their starters and possibly promote Julian Talley from the practice squad.

They could always sign a free agent to bolster their receiving corps as well.

Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that the Giants have “some” interest in Bills WR Mike Williams.

  • Vacchiano adds that a deal seems like a “longshot” at this point in time, but the Giants are reportedly willing to explore the idea.

Yesterday, news broke that Williams had requested a trade out of Buffalo and the Bills granted him permission to seek a trade.

The hangup in trade talks could be the Bills asking price as GM Doug Whaley implied that they will want a lot in return for him.

If he gets me compensation worthy of a No. 1 receiver, which he claimed he is,” Whaley said on Monday, “then we would entertain it.”

The Giants just lost Victor Cruz for the season, so they could use another receiver to help their current group of players.

Buffalo sent a sixth-round pick to the Buccaneers in return for Williams back in April, so this is at least somewhat surprising news given that he has only been with the team for around six months.

The trade deadline is 15 days away.

Williams, 27, is in the second year of his six-year, $40.25 million contract that includes $9.4 million guaranteed. His base salary for the 2014 season is $1.2 million, but it will increase to $5.2 million in 2015. The deal includes a $1 million roster bonus, so it appears unlikely that he would be around with the Bills long enough to receive his 2015 salary.

This season Williams has appeared in five games and caught eight passes for 142 yards receiving and a touchdown.
