Giants Officially Sign DE Robert Ayers

Update:

The New York Giants have announced the signing for former Broncos DE Robert Ayers.

Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports reports that the Giants are expected to sign veteran DE Robert Ayers to a two-year contract.

Ayers, 28, was taken with the No. 18 overall pick by the Broncos back during the 2009 NFL Draft. While he has yet to develop into top-tier defensive end for the Broncos, he is coming off of a decent 2013 season.

Last year, he appeared in 15 games for the Broncos and totaled 29 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and a forced fumble.

New York’s defensive depth is somewhat thin, particularly after the departure of DE Justin Tuck who signed with the Oakland Raiders. Ayers could offer them some depth at defensive end as well as a solid run-defender to work into their rotation.

Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 14 defensive end in 4-3 system last year while being a very effective run-stopper.

We had Ayers rated No. 4 in our Best Available Free Agents.
