Report: Jaguars Likely To Keep Mike Mularkey As HC

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan has already met with a few candidates to replace Gene Smith as the team’s general manager next season. Typically, this would imply that the head coach will likely to be released; but according to Pro Football Talk, “the early sense is that [Mike] Mularkey will be retained.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweets that this the Jaguars’ assistant coaches have been given permission to speak to other teams about potential jobs and adds that this is “not a good sign for Jaguars HC Mike Mularkey.”

Mularkey led the Jaguars to 2-14 record, which is hardly encouraging, but you could easily make the argument that their issues are more related to limited personnel. Jacksonville is poised to head into 2013 with the underwhelming duo of Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne, and there have been rumors of Tim Tebow joining them at some point. It seems clear that whoever the next GM of the Jaguars is, he’ll have to find an adequate NFL-caliber quarterback at some point in the near future.

Jacksonville is reportedly considering Falcons director of player personnel David Caldwell, 49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble and Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross for their GM vacancy.
