Report: Jason Worilds Sign Transition Tag, Steelers Making Progress Towards Extension

Jason La Canfora reports that Steelers OLB Jason Worilds has signed his transition tender worth $9.75 million.

  • La Canfora adds that Worilds and the Steelers have made progress towards a long-term deal.
  • Ed Bouchette confirms that the Steelers are working on an extension for Worilds.

With Worilds signing his transition tender, it prevents any team from trying to step in sign him away from the Steelers in the coming week.

There appears to be a lot of optimism that they will be able to get a long-term agreement in place in the near future that would reduce his current cap figure.

This could, of course, be an indication that veteran OLB LaMarr Woodley could be on the chopping block in the coming weeks.

It’s doubtful the Steelers would carry Woodley at his current cap figure of $13.6 million with Worilds locked up long-term. Pittsburgh would likely have to designate Woodley as post-June 1 release, which would free up $8 million in cap space.

Woodley, 29, dealt with numerous injuries this year which limited him to appearing in just 11 games. Since signing a six-year deal worth $61.5 million back in 2011, Woodley has missed 14 games due injury.

Worilds, 25, produced 63 tackles, eight sacks and two forced fumbles this season and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 12 3-4 outside linebacker in the league.

  1. Apparently, Jason La Canfora’s opinions and “inside information” can’t be taken with any amount of credability because he wrongfully predicted that the Steelers would lose Worilds in free agency and keep Woodley. His dead wrong prediction proves that the majority of sports “journalists”, experts and analysts are ill informed and clueless. The majority of Steelers fans already knew that the opposite of La Canfora’s prediction would happen because we have far better insight on the team than the majority of the so called, “experts” that get paid to do what we do for fun. It is for this reason why I refuse to give my hard earned money to any internet sports site or blog.

    • La Canfora was adamant that Worilds wouldn’t get tagged, so I’ll admit that it was surprising to see him get tagged in the last hour. By the way, we’re not asking for your money. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

      • First, Thank you. Second, I would not have posted had it required a financial commitment. Lastly, your response confirmed the content of my post.
