Report: Jay Gruden Saw Kirk Cousins As A Better Fit For His Offense Than RGIII All Along

 

Mike Wise of the Washington Post, citing a person with knowledge of Jay Gruden’s thinking, reports that the Redskins head coach has actually known all along that Kirk Cousins was a better fit in his offensive scheme than Robert Griffin III.

According to Wise, RGIII wasn’t picking  up the new offensive system and give what the franchise gave up to select him No. 2 overall a few years ago, making a change to Cousins mid-season would have created major issues with the Redskins’ organization.

Gruden has maintained all along there was no quarterback controversy, but Griffen’s early struggles were noticeable as he tried to make the transition to a pocket passer.

However, everything changed when Griffen sustained a dislocated during Sunday’s game, which opened the door for Cousins to show what he can do in Gruden’s offense.

Cousins wound up completing 22-of-33 passes for 250 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions on Sunday against the Jaguars.

It’s still only one game, but he played well enough to at least be encouraged about their chances moving forward. They get the Eagles in Week 3.
