Jets Expected To Release CB Antonio Cromartie

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, Jets CB Antonio Cromartie told teammates that he expects to be released this offseason.

Cromartie, soon to be 30, is entering the final year of his contract, and is scheduled to carry $15 million cap figure in 2014. On top of that, Cromartie has a $5 million roster bonus due in March, which means the Jets could elect to part ways with their top cornerback in order to reduce these figures.

Cromartie is still hoping to re-sign with the team, even if he is forced to test the open market.

It’s worth noting that Cromartie could require offseason knee surgery, which would further complicate his situation with the Jets. He also had a down year in comparison to his 2012 season, so we’ll have to see if the Jets do in fact part ways with their best defensive back in the coming months.
